HABITAT LIBRARY - all about the places where we live

Explore Nearby Nature, and the Books that Enrich Our Lives

Habitat Library’s mission is to help connect people to nature, land, and the places where we live and work. Our goal is to help create a caring community around the love of nature, and all the unexpected wonders to be found in the city and beyond.

Announcing our CITY PARKS BOOK CLUB SERIES 2025

GOOD BOOKS/GREAT PARKS, WITH THEIR OWN STORIES TO TELL
Sign up for one City Parks Book Club or sign up for all four! Our in-person clubs are FREE, but please register because space is limited. We'll be meeting at some of the Front Range's lesser-known 'hidden gem" parks. We're excited about this summer's line-up of books, and we can't wait to learn more about the stories behind each park where we meet. TO REGISTER: simply email jeff@habitatlibrary.co.site
Willa Cather's My Antonia -- a Prairie Reads selection
Set on the oceanic grasslands of Nebraska, Willa Cather's classic novel My Antonia captures early settlers lives on the prairie. "...it all comes back to landscape, to humans changing and being changed by the difficulties and the beauties of the world they must contend with." -- Jane Smiley. WHEN: Sunday, June 29th, 10:30am to 12 noon. WHERE: Denver's Observatory Park. (This City Park Book Club gathering was previously listed at an earlier meeting date).
The Light Eaters by Zoe Schlanger
Atlantic writer Zoe Schlanger's first book The Light Eaters has gathered praise from authors such as Robin Wall Kimmerer, Ed Yong, Elizabeth Kolbert -- and from David George Haskell who writes: "A brilliant must-read about the marvels of the green world. This book shook and changed me, revealing plant intelligence as more strange and wondrous than I could have imagined." WHEN: Sunday, July 20th, 10:30am to 12 noon. WHERE: Denver's Crestmoor Park
The Lost Journals of Sacajawea -- a Native Reads pick
Debra Magpie Earling, a Bitterroot Salish writer, gives fresh life to a historic figure shrouded in myth. “The Lost Journals of Sacajewea is an immensely moving & transcendental work of literature. Debra Magpie Earling tells a story with prose full of light & beauty. This is a striking, elegant, & impressive work of art.”—Morgan Talty, author of Night of the Living Rez. WHEN: Sunday, August 17th, 10:30am to 12 noon. WHERE: Denver's Rocky Mountain Lake Park
The Meadow by James Galvin
Author Jim Harrison has described James Galvin's The Meadow as an extraordinary mixture of novel and natural history. Set along the border of Colorado and Wyoming, Marilynne Robinson had this to say about this Western classic: "The Meadow ponders the attentive quiet at the center of a Western life, the human side of a conversation with place. It is a beautiful book." WHEN: Sunday, September 14th, 10:30am to 12 noon. WHERE: Denver's City of Ulaanbaatar Park
Stiles African American Heritage Center Book Clubs
Stay tuned for the announcement of this fall's Books Clubs. Including the continuation of our partnership with Five Point's Stiles African American Heritage Center on a new series featuring Black writers on topics ranging from food traditions to the history and heritage of the Black West. For each meeting, we'll always plan time for everyone to explore the museum and gardens at the Stiles Center.

What's Next for the Habitat Library?

We're busy establishing the Habitat Library as a nonprofit organization, so until that time we won't be able to process donations. But until then, there are many other ways we can connect with each other! We'll always be looking for people and organizations that will help shape our programs, the library itself, and whatever the Habitat Library is destined to become. Please reach out with your thoughts and questions. OR, sign up for a Book Club or Field Trip (announcements coming soon). AND this will be especially helpful: be another set of eyes and ears looking for the future home for Habitat Library's books and programs. We're looking for the right place and right partners to help create a gathering place focused on books, learning, nature and the land. **jeff@habitatlibrary.co.site**
